Catholic Daily Devotionals  NOVEMBER 10 Scripture Reading: Job 8:7

Dear child of God, our scriptural reading tells us today that you currently are. This thought has been of comfort to me. To all appearances, Saul had made it. He had the kingship, he had power, he was at the top, BUT he was consumed with fear and envy and paranoia.

He was the way things were going quite clearly, and hater them. He tried to take matters into his own hands, always a very bad idea. He tries to circumvent what God is doing. Who hasn’t done that occasionally? We see the writing on the wall, we see the way things are working out, we hate it, we indulge in quarreling and fighting because of our jealousy. James 4:1-2 “What causes fight and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battled within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.”

Long ago, war broke out between the house of David and the house of Saul. But as the war carried on, David grew stronger while Saul grew weak. Why was that? It was not because Saul lacks strategy or strength. In Israel’s war history, despite their strength in numbers, the Israelites lost battles if God was not with them. Conversely, despite their small numbers, they prevailed when God was with them. Victory in war lies with God, not man.

Saul was different. He relied not only upon God, but also on human methods. God chose and anointed Saul, was with him and gave him the Holy Spirit. From then on Saul was with God. But he did not believe God. The book of 2 Samuel chapter 13 talks about Saul waging war with the Philistines, and it says that the Philistines numbered “thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horseman, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude.” But no matter how many chariots or soldiers they would have prevailed. Saul could have won if he had gone out placing his faith in God, but he feared an avoided the philistine army instead. Saul grew weaker because of his impatience, fear, his rebelliousness and his desire to do his own things.
Brethren, defeats and setbacks are encountered when we consciously or unconsciously rely on our human ability and capability.
