Daily Strength Catholic Daily Meditations Discourse on God's words NOVEMBER 2 - Scripture Reading: John 13:17

God established an eternal covenant with man even from the time of old. Man enjoy a relationship with God not just as his creator, but most important as his father. This father-son relationship between God and man was sealed in Jesus who taught us to relate to God as our father (Matt.6:9).

From time man has been failing in his relationship with God. In His nature, God is perfect and will never falter. Human beings on the other hand, are imperfect and selfish. God finally sent his only begotten son to save man from sin and death (jh.3:16), and to teach man how to live above the desires of the flesh (sin). Notwithstanding that man was the one who offended God; God has never relaxed in His efforts to reconcile with man. God is the one constantly calling man to repentance and yet, man continues to stray (Rev. 3:20).

Jesus took flesh and dwelt among us (jn. 1:14) and taught us how to live above the desires of the flesh and how to please God. Jesus taught us to understand that we can live in the world and yet, not give to the standards of the world (Jn. 17: 16). The apostles of Jesus followed Him because they believed in Him and wanted to learn from Him for he is the Great Teacher. They were willing to put in to practice whatever Jesus was teaching them, but in most of the occasions, Jesus taught them what they considered not to be normal especially in the human understanding. Today Jesus in our lead verse, tells His Apostles that they will be blessed if only they put into practice what he has taught them (Jn. 13:17). No matter what people think and what they do, the standard of God cannot change and it its only in keeping to this standard that we play our own part in our relationship with God. It is only when we play this part actively that we will be blessed. Anyone who really wants to please God must surely take to the standard of God taught and lived by Jesus.
